Growing in Open Air

Now I see the secret of the making of the best persons: it is to grow in the open air and to eat and sleep with the earth.

The earth does not flatter or explain itself. It simply offers: salt air, firm sand underfoot, the weight of your own body standing still. When you stop moving long enough to feel the ground, something settles. Not peace exactly, but truthfulness. The body knows what the mind forgets: that growth requires contact, repetition, the simple stubborn presence of showing up outside, again, until your senses sharpen and you begin to belong to something larger than your own thinking.

Question for today

What happens to your mind when your feet touch ground that has not been inside?

Practice

Step outside barefoot or in thin soles for three minutes. Feel the temperature and texture beneath you. Notice one sensation in your feet you have not named before.
