The Water Holds What the Sky Releases
The horizon burns orange and softens to rose at its edges, while the water beneath stays dark, catching only the thinnest ribbons of that light. April's clarity is in how the two halves refuse to match, how the sky spends itself in color while the ocean remains cool and unconvinced below. The waves are small, textured, each one a small decision to move toward shore.
20
Two Poles Against the Pink Hour
The water holds its stillness. Two poles rise from the shoreline, black and spare against the sky's gradual shifting from rose to cream to blue. There is grass, silhouetted and thin. There is the horizon line, exactly where it should be. The clouds move in their slow way, some holding the light longer than others, some already turning toward shadow.
19
What the Body Knows at Sunrise
The heron stands in April's silver light, one leg folded, patient as the fog lifts from the pilings. This is what attention looks like: a creature absolutely present to the cold water, the slight shift of current, the small life moving below. The sky has that particular April gray, neither promises nor complaints, just the light arriving as it does.
