Drink What's Offered

Live in each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit.
Henry David Thoreau

Sunrise No. 100

Most of us live in three seasons at once: regretting the last one, resisting this one, planning the next. Thoreau asks something simpler. Not better. Simpler. Taste the actual fruit on your tongue now, not the idea of fruit. Notice what the air is doing today, its particular temperature and weight. There is no practice of presence without the body's specific report.

Question for today

What is one thing your senses are reporting right now that your mind has not yet named?

Practice

Pick up whatever you're about to drink and hold it for three full breaths before you taste it. Notice temperature, weight, smell.
