Listening Without Fixing
The most basic and powerful way to connect to another person is to listen. Just listen.
Listening is not waiting for your turn to speak. It is not preparing advice while someone talks. This morning, notice what happens when you stop translating what you hear into solutions. A friend mentions trouble sleeping. Instead of remedies, sit with that trouble. Let it be incomplete. This is how we honor another person's actual life, not the version we think they should have.
Question for today
When someone tells you something hard, do you listen to them or to the answer forming in your head?
Practice
When someone speaks to you today, count three full breaths before you respond. Say nothing in those breaths.
