What Lies Beneath Your Feet

Heaven is under our feet as well as over our heads.
Henry David Thoreau
Sunrise No. 114
Sunrise No. 114

The ground holds as much as the sky does. A blade of grass, the cold sand between your toes, the solid wood of a dock at dawn, the particular ache in your knees when you kneel: these are not lesser things. Thoreau reminds us that transcendence is not only up. It lives in what we stand on, what we touch, what we return to. This morning, notice what supports you before you look anywhere else.

Question for today

What have you touched with your hands in the last hour that you forgot to actually feel?

Practice

Before you leave your room, place your palm flat on something solid, wood or earth or stone, and feel its temperature for five full seconds.
