Three Sounds, One Listening
The three great elemental sounds in nature are the sound of rain, the sound of wind in a primeval wood, and the sound of the outer ocean on a beach.
Beston names what we know but forget: that sound is a teacher. Not metaphorically. The ocean's rhythm has no agenda, no interpretation. It arrives and continues whether we listen or not. When you stop trying to hear it correctly and simply let it enter, something shifts. The noise in your chest quiets. Not because the world becomes peaceful, but because you stop fighting the sound that was always there.
Question for today
What sound have you been ignoring that might actually be trying to settle you?
Practice
Spend two minutes with one elemental sound, rain or wind or water, without naming or judging it.
