A Star Among Other Lights

The sun is but a morning star.
Henry David Thoreau
Sunrise No. 119
Sunrise No. 119

Thoreau asks us to hold the sun a little more loosely. What we treat as the whole of the day is one bright thing among many, and the morning is larger than its loudest light. Attention, today, might look like noticing what sits beside the obvious: the second sound in the room, the thought that arrives after the first, the breath that follows the one you meant to take. There is more day to wake into.

Question for today

What has been quietly shining beside the thing you usually notice first?

Practice

Write six things you notice this morning without editing, then circle the one you almost left off the list and read it twice.
